24 Season 7: Episode 1 Hits n Misses

I have been a die hard fan of 24 for some time.  I got into it reluctantly.  A friend suggested that my husband watch it - but I think it was already into season 3 or 4.  He watched the first episode of whatever season that was, and was hooked, so for an anniversary gift, I presented him with Season 1 on DVD.  He asked me to watch it with him, and at first I hesitated.  I'd much rather play in the Rain or do other stuff on the computer, but I decided to step away from the PC and snuggle with hubby, possibly go to sleep, while he watches this crazy show.

Within miniutes of starting Disc 1 of Season 1, I was hooked.  We had day - long marathons on Sunday afternoon, popping the discs in like a junkie pops pills.  The kids were downstairs, hungry and neglected.  They actually came upstairs at 7pm, begging for food.

It did not take us long to catch up on all the seasons.  This was the only show that I never, ever, fall asleep watching.  I mourned like a crazy woman when President Allstate - er, President David Palmer, was assasinated.  I grew to love the loathesome President Logan.  And Nina!  What a BAD GIRL.  The worst thingst to happen though, were the deaths of Edgar, Curtis, and TONY, the rescues of Kim, and pretty much all of Season 6.

Here is my review of last night's premier episode, originally published on my personal blog.

I am happy that 24 is back. There were many things that amused me, some that puzzled me, and some that annoyed me. Here are my personal "Hits & Misses" in case you care.

  • HIT: Tony is BACK!
  • Miss: It was neither shocking, nor a surprise - the previews told us about it for months.
  • HIT: Jack told off a pompous senator during a hearing.
  • Miss: Jack was wearing a tie and had a briefcase. No hoodie or Jack Sack.
  • HIT: Jack is quite rude when people harass him about his "techniques" with terrorist suspects.
  • Miss: Jack wore a Columbo-esque trenchcoat, sans wrinkles and cigar, for most of the episode.
  • HIT: Fibbies think they can "handle" Jack.
  • Miss: There was not even a mention of Chloe.
  • HIT: Jack turned a Bic pen into a potential lethal weapon.
  • Miss: There was no mass destruction, and only three people got killed.
  • HIT: President Allstate is with us, via commercials.
  • Miss: Madame President is less interesting than Wayne Palmer in a coma, if that is possible.

Now, I would LOVE to be wrong about this prediction I'm about to give. I've watched so many of these shows that it's hard to be surprised anymore, but here's my theory, and it's hardly original...

TONY ISN'T REALLY A BAD GUY. He's an undercover double agent (gasp!)

My reason for suspecting this is mainly because Tony stopped the collision of the airplanes, and said it was just "a warning." Since when do real terrorists give WARNINGS?

Would MARWAN have done that? HECK NO, he's have let them crash, killing all the people he could, and everyone watching would have let out a roar of approval.

I was disappointed at the lack of death and destruction on this 24 season premier. THIS IS WHAT WE'VE COME TO LOVE AND EXPECT from 24. 24 Redemption had a soccer game refereed with machine guns. What is up? Why such a gentle premier?

And while I LOVE My Tony, I'd really like it to be true that he IS bad. Nina Myers was one of the best characters ever, and the biggest mistake they ever made, apart from saving Kim and killing Edgar, (and killing Curtis...) was to kill off the lovely-but-lethal Nina. Jack needs an adversary who knows him inside and out.

Dave Barry's 24 Blog is the BEST. Every episode is made even MORE entertaining with Dave's commentary and everyone else's comments. My favorite quote from last night was by SuzyQ: "Aw, Tony came back all mean. Just like the animals who return from Pet Cemetary..."

Steve the 24 Guy - found him last season on Dave's blog. He writes AWESOME recaps, that are actually better than the show, esp. since there's a bit of parody thrown in. Thanks Steve!

My final note: Welcome back, Jack - I've missed you, and I want to see you shoot some LOTSA thighs, and yell in people's faces a LOT more.

Central Oregon Short Sale Scam - It Can Happen To YOU TOO!

As foreclosures and short sales become more and more common, I expect to see scams like this one in Oregon hit everywhere across the US, and yes, even here in Northeast PA.

BEWARE!  DO NOT BE A VICTIM.  If someone claims to represent the bank, VERIFY IT WITH YOUR BANK. Do not believe everything you hear!

Thank you to Central Oregon Broker Thesa Chambers, for this heads up.  Forewarned is forearmed.

The Scam

We are seeing a scary scam in Central Oregon and if has not hit your area it could be any time.  People posing as asset managers claim they need to winterize a home that is vacant and listed as a short sale.  They call the seller or the listing agent and claim to be with an asset management company needing to winterize a vacant home.

The Method

Upon calling these folks are very persistent and make it seem that they are looking out for the seller and the bank as well.  They explain that they know the home is vacant and that to save the seller the expense of loosing a home with weather related issues.  They claim that if the home is not winterized when the bank takes possession that the seller will be billed for the repairs.  They claim they have spoken to seller and that the seller understands the need.

The Result

Upon gaining access to the home these folks strip it.  They take everything they can – the light fixtures, appliances, heaters, hot water tanks and anything else they can get away with.  They have not only taken these items but sometimes done even more damage by removing plumbing fixtures without turning off the water.

What Can You Do?

As a listing agent of a short sale home you need to realize that you represent the seller – and that unless the seller has given you permission to let the folks in they have no authority.  A bank owned home will not allow early occupancy – this is no different than the bank trying to take early occupancy (if it were the bank).  Seller’s if you are called directly – get the name of the company and contact your lender – check it out.  Do not assume you are being told the truth.

Central Oregon Short Sale Sellers if you have moved out of your home, you might want to protect the home from winter weather by having it winterized.  If you do not know how please call me I can connect you with someone that can do it for you.  If you have moved out you might want to make it obvious you have not abandoned your home.  Agents, protect your seller and make sure you are serving them properly – click here for my story of this Central Oregon short sale scam.

Wallenpaupack Lakefronts and Slippery Sleet -n- Snow!

I closed out 2008 on Lake Wallenpaupack with a slippery slope - at 11 Big Woods on Lake Wallenpaupack toGumble Cottage Interior be exact.

I was contacted by some buyers who were curious about this affordable lakefront cabin - this is one of our Gumble style cottages.

If you're from the area, you know all about Gumble Chalets...if you're not, here's a short primer. Many years ago, Gumble Brothers built several charming cabins around Lake Wallenpaupack. These cottages are distinctive and feature log style railings and accents, mostly hewn from locally harvested logs, hard wood floors, and a compact but comfortable floor plan. Designed to be summer cottages, they have an Adirondack flair to them and are locally famous...they are cute, charming, and well built.

The snow was furiously falling from the heavens; and since it was New Year's Eve, there were lots of holiday travelers around - and not too many PennDot trucks yet. Were they partying early?

I drove to the cottage, priced at only $435,000, with my customers, thankful that my trusty Honda had new winter tires and a terrific traction control system. As the wind whipped across the lake and blew snow into our faces, I wondered: "Am I nuts? Shouldn't I be at home snuggled under a warm blanket with my thick sweater and fuzzy slippers?"

Nah. This is my job - I love selling real estate, even if it is a bit on the chilly side.

My customers decided that this cabin was a bit too small for their use - but I know someone is ready for this charmingly rustic place on a quiet cove (with lake views from living room and from the balcony just off the loft.)

Let me know if you'd like to see it. (Though if the snow is flying I may actually ask if we can wait till the roads are plowed....)
